Gogoi assures govt support to improve Assamese films

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]hief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that the quality of Assamese films has to improve further to secure their own place in the competitive world. He assured that the State Government would extend its support to the Assamese film industry.
In his speech after releasing a book titled “The Moving Image and Assamese Culture-Joymoti, Jyotiprasad Agarwala, and Assamese Cinema” Mr. Gogoi said the state had talented actors and his government had been making efforts to encourage them.
He said that Assamese films reflected how rich the Assamese culture and heritage has been.
Mr. Gogoi said that through the first Assamese film Joymoti, Assam’s culture icon Jyotiprasad Agarwala, a freedom fighter, portrayed the patriotism, commitment of Assamese women towards the country and its people and how empowered they were.
The book authored by actor, director, television producer, political activist and honorary chairperson of the Assam State Film Finance and Development Corporation Bobbeeta Sharma traces the history of Assamese cinema since making of the first Assamese film Joymoti in 1935 and its progress in the context of Assam’s history and culture.Professor (retd) Mihir Bhattacharya of Film Studies Department, Jadavpur University, under whose guidance the author had undertaken the research work and put the findings in the form of a book, in his speech, said that cinema has been part of a mélange of cultural activities, it is not an isolated technological marvel but a complex medium which involves all other cultural medium.
