Dimapur, Dec. 12 (EMN): In what can be considered as a watershed in the annals of Nagaland Judiciary and a giant leap towards transparency and accessibility in the judicial system, the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench on Monday started live streaming of the court proceedings.

It came more than two months after the Supreme Court started live streaming the hearings on YouTube and a notification issued regarding The Gauhati High Court (Live Streaming and Recording of Court Proceedings) Rules, 2022.

By implementing the live streaming process despite not having a High Court of its own, Nagaland became the third state in the Northeast after Assam and Meghalaya to do so.

In a press release issued on Monday, The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench said the right to access justice, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, encompasses the right to access live court proceedings.

“To imbue greater transparency, inclusivity and foster access to justice, the eCommittee, Supreme Court of India, has undertaken the project of live streaming of court proceedings on priority. With the objective of implementation of the open court concept, the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has commenced live streaming of court proceedings in respect of Court No. 1 from the 12th of December 2022 at Kohima Bench, Nagaland,” read the update.

It said the move will “enable access to live court proceedings, including matters of public interest to citizens, journalists, civil society, academicians and law students on a real time basis, which was not otherwise possible owing to geographical or infrastructural issues”.

With proper internet facility, it said the public can now view the court proceedings from anywhere and help them understand the functioning of the Courts better.

“The live streaming of court proceedings is being telecast on the official YouTube Channel namely, ‘eCourts Nagaland‘ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUdfq0DcZYo) in accordance with the guidelines of the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court (Live Streaming and Recording of Court Proceedings) Rules 2022,” read the press release, adding that glitches due to internet connectivity issue could be witnessed initially as the process is still at its nascent stage.

It went on to inform that the live streaming link will be made available to the public on the official website of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench.
