Fresh violence reported in Manipur; mob burn car

Dimapur: Fresh incidents of violence resurfaced at various places in Manipur on Thursday.

After a firing incident at Dolaithabi on May 10 where one Assam Rifles personnel was critically  injured, another incident of firing was reported on Thursday morning at Molpheitampak in Churachandpur district, according to sources.

Meanwhile, trucks loaded with essential commodities heading towards Imphal were blocked on the national highway with logs and burning tyres by a mob from Kangpokpi town to Motbung towards Imphal, and to Taphou Kuki towards Dimapur.

The irate mob at Kangpokpi town also burnt down a car along the highway near Downtown IT road at noon.

Road blockades with stones, logs, and burning tyres were also witnessed at Hengbung, and South Changoubung till Kangpokpi town.

Similarly, the highway was blocked at Keithelmanbi, Leikop, Saparmeina, and Motbung villages along the Imphal-Dimapur road.

Volunteers were transported by trucks and other vehicles at various locations while most of them were seen carrying catapults, the source said.

A reliable source informed that the trucks carrying essential commodities returned towards Dimapur from Hengbung village.

Despite the intense violence and agitation by the mob, no casualties were reported till the time of filing this report.

Kangpokpi CSOs meet interlocutor

Meanwhile, the civil society organisations of Kangpokpi district met with the interlocutor of the United People’s Front (UPF), and the Kuki National Organization (KNO), the two conglomerate organisations of the Kuki militants under tripartite talks with the Government of Manipur and Government of India in Kangpokpi district.

Thangpimang, President of the Thadou Youth Association, Sadar Hills on behalf of the civil society organisations said that “in connection with the current Manipur unrest, we have met AK Mishra, the Interlocutor of UPF and KNO today and conveyed our stance very loud and clear –no separate political administration, no rest”.

‘We also appealed to the Central Government to consider our sentiment and materialise our clear-cut stance at the earliest,’ he asserted.

The meeting was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India,

Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi, Kuki Students’ Organisation Sadar Hills, Thadou Inpi Kangpokpi district, Thadou Students’ Association Sadar Hills, Thadou Youth Association Sadar Hills, Zillai, Gangte Students’ Organisation, and other civil body leaders also attended the meeting.
