Dimapur, July 27 (EMN): Flash flood triggered by torrential rains in the last few days washed away Nkwakreu irrigation dam in New Jalukie village under Peren district on July 26.
The dam was constructed and maintained by local farmers who get their due share of water cannel for cultivation in their respective fields. One affected farmer from New Jalukie, Irangbui, stated that the agricultural land covering some few hectares would be impossible to cultivate following the damage to the existing irrigation dam as there was no alternate source.
He stated that the affected farmers have communicated to the authority including the concerned department to act swiftly for timely restoration as the main source of livelihood for the local farmers of New Jalukie village and surrounding areas are basically of paddy cultivation.
He stated that in a telephonic conversation with one of the affected farmers, the Water Resource department in Peren has advised them to approach the district administration for immediate assistance under disaster management. The department had reportedly told that possible assistance could be compensated for the loss.
Meanwhile, the affected farmers have sought the attention of the district administration through the media to understand the seriousness of the matter and to extend timely restoration of the damaged dam under any appropriate available programme.
