Temporal relief mechanisms and first-touch interventions from the local administrations are underway following the cyclonic winds that lashed parts of Mokokchung district, Phek, Longleng and Wokha during the intervening night of April 30-May 1.
Administrations and politicians, including the chief minister, are currently undertaking first-touch relief works. However, there has yet to be official posturing about rebuilding and associated infrastructural intervention especially for public institutions to offset the damage caused by the storm, one of the severest in a decade.
The establishment of the Mokokchung deputy commissioner has set up a disaster relief committee to coordinate relief measures for those affected. In said regard, public organizations or individuals desiring to donate relief materials or offer monetary assistance may contact the deputy commissioner’s office, Mokokchung at the numbers: (a) additional deputy commissioner for headquarters at 9436603921and (b) extra additional commissioner for headquarters at 9612546599 or 9436273942.
Monetary donations can be deposited to the account: account number 35742736559; name of the account: District Relief Committee Mokokchung; IFSC CODE: SBIN0001193 SBI Branch Mokokchung.
So far, a press release from the administration stated on Monday, the chief minister of Nagaland has donated Rs. 10 lakh; the Kohima Ao Officers Telongjem has donated Rs. 2 lakh; Mokokchung District Badminton Association has donated Rs. 14, 000.
Also, the Mokokchung District Planning and Development Board meeting for the month of May 2016 will be conducted on May 5 in view of the current situations.
The Kohima Ao Officers Telongjem has extended assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the victims of the storm that struck Mokokchung and neighboring districts and destroyed hundreds of houses. The cash relief was extended to the victims of the disaster in various parts of Mokokchung district through the office of the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung.
Politicians are also doing their bit as well. Minister for National Highway, Mechanical and Election, Nuklutoshi, and the district administration of Mokokchung besides local political parties visited the affected places. An ‘immediate relief fund’ of Rs 25, 000 was given to the victim’s families to Changtongya Yinsen village; Rs 1 lakh each for Changtongya town Akhoya, Unger and Kilongmen village was given by the minister, a DIPR report said on Monday.
Also, chief minister TR Zeliang undertook an “aerial survey” of Chuchuyimlung and surrounding villages affected by the storm from a helicopter on Monday before landing at Impur.
Zeliang handed out a cheque of Rs ten lakh to Sushil Kumar for relief. The relief was given from the chief minister’s relief fund, it was informed. The chief minister also gave away cheques of Rs.10 lakhs each to Zunheboto district and Mon district and Rs five lakh to Longleng district.
