First inter-high school basketball tournament kicks off in Kohima
KOHIMA — The first inter-high school basketball tournament for Kohima district, themed “Catch Them Young,” commenced at St. Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Lerie, Kohima, on Wednesday.
Organised by the Kohima District Basketball Association (KDBA) in collaboration with the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme, the tournament aims to provide a platform for young talent and nurture them to grow and compete on a larger stage.
MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso attended the opening programme and expressed hope that the event will foster unity among students and schools. He said that basketball is a game of high energy and continuous movement and advised players to maintain body coordination. He added that engaging in this sport would enhance physical fitness.
Dr. Rhütso expressed hope that the KDBA will continue to identify and cultivate talent, grooming players to excel not only at the state level but also at the national level and beyond. He further encouraged players to discover their strengths, invest in their skills, and strive to be the best.
Vimhalie Pienyii, president of KDBA, also addressed the players on the occasion.
Earlier, Vemedo Kezo, principal of St. Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School, led the invocation and Khrielasakuo Keretsü led the oath-taking ceremony.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports and the Birds and Bees Talk. Nearly 30 teams, including boys’ and girls’ teams from various schools in Kohima, are participating in the three-day tournament.
