Commissioner of Excise and Prohibition, H Atokhe Aye along with other officers of Excise department before the destruction of seized contraband drugs in Dimapur on Saturday.

Dimapur, July 3 (EMN): The Excise Narcotics Cell and Mobile Squad jointly destroyed 20 kg of ganja, 1935 gm of heroin, 19397 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, 692691 capsules and tablets of Spasmo Proxyvon and Alprozolam, 2150 kg of poppy straw during a destruction programme held on July 2.

Speaking at the destruction programme, Commissioner of Excise and Prohibition, H Atokhe Aye, commended the two units for the remarkable achievement. He pointed out that there has been a steady rise in the usage of drugs especially brown sugar (Sunflower) among the younger generation in recent years and stressed on the need to address the issue with urgency before it assumes an alarming proportion, an update from the department stated.

Atokhe was of the view that enforcement agencies like the Excise department should be supported at all levels in the fight against the dreaded menace of drug addiction. He reminded that it should be the bounden duty of every citizen and social organisations to play their roles as responsible pillars of the society.

For effective implementation of the drug laws, he informed that proper training courses designed for the purpose of achieving greater convictions in the court of law are also being initiated under the training regime of the department. He further encouraged the personnel to keep up the good performance in the days ahead.

Brief reports on the seizures were read out by the Superintendent of Excise, Mobile Squad and the Narcotics Cell.

Deputy commissioner of Excise, S Chanlei Angh, chaired the programme, while the vote of thanks was delivered by the assistant commissioner of Excise (Admn), Phyobemo Kikon.
