DIMAPUR — The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has expressed shock over an alleged extortion incident involving a farmers’ group at the Dimapur railway station on October 29.

In a statement, the ENSF said that it vehemently condemns the act perpetrated by a group of ‘unscrupulous individuals’ within the railway parcel premises at the Dimapur railway station on the day at around 6:30 pm, when the Naga farmers group (NFG) was rightfully in the process of booking one tonne of arecanut at the counter.

According to the statement, the NFG procured the arecanut from the Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board.

The ENSF said that a group of five to six individuals posing as representatives of ‘agency’ illegally intervened in the process by coercing railway officials to halt the booking process, insisting that all purchases be exclusively and strictly channelled and booked through them.

They forcibly seized the parcels and demanded a penalty of INR 2 lakh, equal to the value of the parcel, according to the ENSF. It informed that an FIR was filed in this regard at the Government Railway Police Station on October 31.

The federation has condemned the act, saying that it has directly outraged the sentiments of the NFG and entrepreneurs in general.

The federation also beseeched the law-enforcing agency to look into the matter at the earliest possible time and book the perpetrators under the relevant section of the law.
