UDA to support NDA’s presidential candidate

Dimapur, July 6 (EMN): The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Nagaland has unanimously decided to support National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu in the upcoming election for the highest office.

The former Governor of Jharkhand on Wednesday arrived at Dimapur Airport from Meghalaya after visiting Arunachal Pradesh on the same day to seek support for the July 18 election.

She was received by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and other ministers on her arrival at Dimapur Airport, before heading to Niathu Resort in Chumoukedima to meet the legislators from the state.

Rio took to Twitter to welcome the NDA presidential candidate to the state. “We are honoured to have you in Nagaland, the Land of Festivals,” he wrote.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Minister of Higher Education and Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along, who is also the president of BJP state unit, said that the UDA government has conscientiously decided to support Murmu.

He added that she was welcomed by the leaders of the state, including Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, UDA chairman and NPF leaders.

He went on to say that all the leaders have been “kind enough to completely, conscientiously support Droupadi Murmur’s candidature to be the next president of this great country”.

Minister of Planning and Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu also affirmed that the UDA government will support her.

He shared that Murmu is a dedicated and devoted lady, who is also from Santhal tribe and has “great concern for the tribals”.

He went on to say that she performed well as the Govenor of Jharkhand for five years. “She is also the only lady from the tribals to become the president of India, we are proud and support her (sic),” he added.

He further stated that, “from Nagaland, we are unanimous and we will be all supporting her”, and ‘that message was relayed to her by the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister in the meeting today’.

Rajya Sabha MP from the state, S Phangnon Konyak was also present in the meeting with the legislators led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio Murmu held a meeting with the legislators led by Chief Minister, Deputy CM Y Patton, UDA chairman TR Zeliang and NPF legislative party leader Kuzholuzo Nienu.

Droupadi Murmu left for Guwahati, Assam after the meeting on the same day.

If elected, Murmu (64), will be the first tribal president of India and the second woman in the post.
