Documentaries from Manipur to be screened at MIFF

Imphal, May 30 (EMN): Eight documentary films from Manipur will be screened at the ongoing 17th edition of Mumbai International Film Festival for documentary, short fiction and animation films (MIFF-2022), which is one of the biggest documentary film festivals in the world.
Started on May 29, the week-long MIFF-2022 is being organised by the Films Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, government of India in Mumbai from May 29 to June 4th.
The eight documentary films are — Haobam Paban Kumar’s Pabung Syam, Phum Shang, 50 Years of Manipuri Cinema, Borun Thokchom’s I Rise, James Khangembam’s Meiram – The Fireline, Maibam Amarjeet Singh’s Highways of Life, Aribam Syam Sharma’s The Monpas of Arunachal Pradesh and Ronel Haobam’s Thang-Ta — according to the president of Film Society of Manipur.
Paban Kumar’s 52 minute ‘Pabung Syam’, based on the life and work of the legendary filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma through the eyes of one of his admirer and Borun Thokchom’s 52 minute ‘I Rise’, which focuses on the real life of a seven-time Asian Championship pugilist, Laishram Sarita Devi, are among 67 films selected for the national competition section of the festival.
James Khangembam’s 33-minute debut ‘Meiram – The Fireline’, an environmental conservation film shot at Punsilok area of the Langol Hills in the outskirts of Manipur state capital Imphal, is among eight films selected in the International Prism section of MIFF 2022.
Maibam Amarjeet Singh’s 52 minute ‘Highways of Life’, based on the high-octane lives of Manipur’s highway truckers, will be screened on June 1, while Haobam Paban Kumar’s 15 minute ‘50 Years of Manipuri Cinema: A Glimpse’ will be screened on June 2 under the Special Package: Portraits From The North East.
The Films Division will also pay special homage to ace Indian cinematographer, Irom Maipak (1967-2021), who was the only national award-winning cinematographer of Manipur and the founding president of the All Manipur Cinematographers Association.
