DIMAPUR — In pursuance of the State Election Commission’s notification, the deputy commissioners of Peren, Kohima and Niuland have issued an order under Section 126 of the Representative of the peoples Act 1951 stating that the campaigning period for the municipal and town council election 2024 should come to an end with affect from 4 pm on June 24 and accordingly public meetings would be prohibited during the period of 48 hours fixed for conclusion of poll.
The order stated that no person should convene, hold or attend, join or address any public meeting or procession in connection with election or display to the public any election matter by means of cinematography, television or other similar apparatus and should not allow to propagate any election matter to the public by holding or by arranging to holding of any musical concert or any theatrical performance or any other entertainment or amusement with a view to attracting the members of the public.
It cautioned that any person who contravenes the provision should be punishable with imprisonment for a term which might extend to two years or with fine or with both.
It added that presence of political functionaries, party workers, procession functionaries, campaign functionaries etc., who have been brought from outside and who are not voters of the respective town council should not continue as their continued presence after campaign ends might undermine the atmosphere for free and fair poll.
However, it stated that restriction might not be insisted upon the office bearers of the political party who are in-charge of the state headquarters and their movements during the period in question should remain confined normally between the party office and place of his stay.
