Dimapur police issues crimes update

Dimapur, July 15: The Anti Extortion Team (AET) under Zone-I of Dimapur police and personnel of Women Cell arrested one Toshili Yepthomi, wife of late Shikavi Yepthomi, on charges of extortion while she was collecting illegal taxes from the butchers at Super Market area, Dimapur, on June 29.
According to police report, she is a ‘Rajapeyu’ under UT-1 of the GPRN/NSCN. A criminal case has been registered and under investigation.
On July 3, one Sajid Khan, son of Isaac Khan of Karimganj, Assam, was arrested on charges of murder of Rohim Ali. The duo had an altercation over a mobile phone in inebriated condition during which the accused struck the victim multiple times with a bamboo pole in the head resulting to death. They were both working in a construction site at Padampukhri, Dimapur. The citizens after knowing the matter apprehended the accused person and informed the police. A case was registered and under investigation, police said.On July 9, the anti-extortion team under Zone- I of Dimapur police arrested two persons from Doshehe Market area on charges of extortion after they were caught forcibly collecting money from the trucks. The arrested persons were identified as Zhekito Awomi, son of Tonizhe Awomi, and Khuluto Yepthomi, son of Kiqheho Yepthomi. A case was registered and under investigation.
On July 11, the Dimapur police arrested one Joel Zeliang, son of late Ikube Zeliang on charges of extortion after he was found issuing demand slip of the NNC (NA) to the business establishments in the market area. Incriminating documents were also seized from his possession. A case in this regard has been registered with the East Police Station and investigation is on, the report said.
On the same day, Dimapur police arrested one person identified as Ashish Shah, son of Prem Shah for involving in the sale of pre-activated SIM cards belonging to various service providers. Initially, 117 SIM cards were seized from his shop at Hazi Park area but a subsequent raid in his residence led to further seizure of 1241 SIM cards – both pre-activated and non-activated. Besides, 19 stamp seals of retailers, letter pads of multiple village councils, passport size photographs of over 500 different individuals and other incriminating document were recovered from him. Police said investigation into the case is being seriously pursued as the matter concerns security issues, fraud and violation of the guidelines set by the Department of Telecom. It added that the role of the service providers in the racket is also being investigated into and appropriate action would be initiated if found involved.
Meanwhile, the police also cautioned various bodies authorized to issue residential certificates to exercise scrutiny while issuing such certificates lest they be liable to be prosecuted.
