DIMAPUR, JUNE 14

Unlike the usual events with prominent personalities doing the honor of gracing an occasion as chief guests, a 5 year old Sochumlo M Kikon, a Thalassemia patient, was the chief guest on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day observed by District Hospital Dimapur on June 14.
Thalassemia affects children who require repeated blood transfusions and petite Sochumlo M Kikon has been going through blood transfusion since her birth. Accompanied by her parents, Sochumlo was less aware of what she was going through as her smile concealed all.
With this year’s theme ‘Thank you for saving my life,” District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) Blood Bank, observed World Blood Donor’s Day organized by Nagaland Restaurant & Hotels Association with Dimapur Blood Bank receiving 72 Units of Blood from donors on the day. The programme presided by Blood Bank Dimapur In-charge, Dr. T Temsu, noted that the blood donors day message was to ‘save others life today.’ He also anticipated pledge to support patients on dialysis, chemotherapy, blood disorders and emergency situations.
Appealing upon citizens to continue their support, participation, to take ownership and to be a regular donor, he called upon to donate blood only in licensed bank.
Dr. T Temsu underlined that at every second, there is someone who require blood. He said due to blood unavailability, many people lose lives through accidents, emergencies or complicated disease. He, however, hoped that with awareness created and mass volunteers coming forward for donations, the complications for blood transfusion would be reduced extensively in the coming days.
World Blood Donor’s Day is observed each year worldwide on June 14 to honor the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the man behind development of blood group system. It is an annual event meant for conveying appreciation to the blood donors who save lives by donating blood. Global celebration is observed to honor and thank people who donate blood voluntarily, to save others lives without expecting anything in return.
Witnessing the occasion with immense support, the Medical Superintendent, Blood Bank in-charge, nurses and staff of DHD expressed their gratitude to NSBTC, Dimapur Ao Arogo youth Ministry Lungmen, Server Club, Netaji Birthday Celebration Committee, Nagaland Restaurant & Hotels Association, Dimapur District Auto rickshaws Drivers Union, Nagi Paying Guest, DAPCU, 32 Assam Rifles and Dimapur District Blood Donors Association.
According to the report collected from 2010-2015, Dimapur tops the blood donors in Nagaland.
