DIMAPUR — Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dimapur, on Tuesday requested the GBs and chairmen to uphold the sanctity of their offices, remain impartial towards different political parties, and work conscientiously.

He stated this during a district-level coordination committee meeting under Dimapur district for the peaceful conduct of the urban local body (ULB) elections held at the DC conference hall in Dimapur, according to a DIPR report.

The DC, also the convenor of the committee, emphasised that the meeting was convened according to the directives of the State Election Commission, stressed the importance of ensuring that the campaigning period is adhered to and requested that the GBs keep the administration informed of any issues, assisting in maintaining law and order.

He requested that the political parties maintain decorum during canvassing to prevent disturbances to the general public and highlighted the need for cooperation among all to ensure the elections are conducted smoothly and peacefully.

Kevithuto Sophe, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, requested the GBs and chairmen, as well as political parties, to work closely with the administration and the police so that the elections are held peacefully.

He also highlighted the guidelines for candidates and political parties to follow from the announcement of the election until its completion.

Speaking at the meeting, W Manpai Phom, the Returning Officer (RO) of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), highlighted that the municipal elections were taking place after a hiatus of over 20 years and urged candidates and political parties to avoid using unfair tactics.

He requested the GBs and colony chairmen to conscientiously fulfil their duties during the election, exercising fairness, upholding their offices’ integrity and providing equal opportunities to all political parties. Also, he called upon them to act as the government’s vigilant observers, collaborating closely with the administration and promptly reporting any untoward incidents to the authorities.

Mhalo Humtsoe, ADC and RO of East Dimapur Town Council, urged political parties to refrain from using single-use plastic during the elections. Instead, she encouraged them to use cloth banners and paper posters, emphasising not to place these materials on government properties.

Humtsoe encouraged the GBs and colony chairmen to foster a peaceful atmosphere in their respective colonies to ensure peaceful elections. She also announced that voter information slips, containing essential details such as voting dates, times, and polling station locations, would be distributed to all colonies within a few days.
