DIMAPUR — With an aim to provide self-employment opportunities for women, Dimapur Changtongyatsür Telongjem (DCT) conducted a one-day skill development programme on pickle making at Hotel East Inn in Dimapur on Saturday.

The resource person, Amenla Longkumer, who is also the wife of Borlingri pastor T Apok Jamir, demonstrated on five different varieties of pickle-making including bamboo shot pickle, king chilli pickle, green chilli pickle, bitter gourd pickle and radish pickle.

Explaining the various techniques and ideas for better pickle-making, she advised to avoid using aluminum pans and never to cover the lid of pickle bottle while drying in the sun but to use a piece of clean cloth for longer sustainability.

The resource person also said that pickles should never be kept in refrigerator as it creates moisture, which was responded to with laughter from the participants since many have been practicing the wrong way. She said storing in refrigerator cuts short the longevity of any kind of pickle.

The president of Changtongya Senso Telongjem Dimapur (Changtongya Union Dimapur), Imti Jamir, who was also present during the programme, extended words of appreciation to the women group for such initiative and encouraged the participants to make optimum use of the opportunity so as to make the learning fruitful for the uplift of not only the individual and families but for the larger economic growth of the society.

He further added that the youth of today have greater scope of generating income and living a self -reliant life through various self-entrepreneurial ventures such as food-making and processing even with locally available and seasonal foods.

While encouraging all to work hard, he said, “appreciation encourages one to work harder and that encouragement promotes small businesses.”

A total of about 70 women including students, working mothers and homemakers took part in the one-day programme.
