Dimapur, March 3 (EMN): The deputy commissioner of Kohima, Gregory Thejawelie, informed that any private person or group desiring to purchase land in and around Kohima town and other government acquired areas particularly at New Secretariat, Thizama, Lerie and Kohima Science College in Jotsoma areas should first obtain necessary clearance from its office, failing which it cautioned that both the seller and buyer would be doing so at their own risk and necessary penal action would be initiated as per the relevant provisions of law.
The public notice was issued following receipt of numerous complaints and reports relating to rampant selling and encroachment of government land having project installations for public service delivery. It stated that the government has seriously viewed such activities.
Pointing out that the government’s endeavour was to provide all requisite support to safeguard the rights of the genuine landowners, it however stated that illegal activities of encroachment on government land and government quarters would be dealt sternly as per the provisions contained in Section- 5 (1) and 6 (1) of the Nagaland Eviction of Persons in Unauthorised Occupation of Public Land Act 1971, which entails issuing notice, eviction etc., adding that in case of illegal occupation would invite imprisonment and fine.
The notice further stated that in the matter of sale and purchase of land within the government acquired area and land coming under 1934- 35 map of British conquered area, both the buyer and the seller would be liable for action as it would tantamount to illegal transaction and attract penalty under appropriate section of law.
The notice was issued in the interest of the general public and compliance by all concerned.
