DIMAPUR — Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) has expressed concern over the unfortunate yet expected incident that took place in the evening of July 4 at Chümoukedima that resulted in the loss of two precious lives and injuries sustained by others and affirmed its commitment to ensure safety of the people and bring the NHIDCL to justice for its incomprehension and ignorance in ensuring the safety of the travelers.

A CYO press release issued by its president, Seyieneilhou Keyho, and the general secretary, Visielhoulie Kuotsu, stated that it had been observant during the development of the 4 lane highway in that particular area where the steep cliffs with loose rocks and soil proved to be dangerous. CYO added that it had written a representation to the state government on July 21, 2021, appealing for adequate and proper earth cutting to ensure safety, a copy of which was also served to the NHIDCL.

CYO has squarely blamed NHIDCL for not taking any preventive measures to mitigate such incidents. It alleged that less earth cutting in the form of steep excavation was done instead of slope or step cutting, which was deemed necessary for safety purpose.

“It is evident that the corporation has no concern for the safety of the commuters and only seems determined in finishing the work for namesake,” CYO alleged.

In this regard, CYO has committed to pursue the matter to any extent so as to ensure the safety of the people and bring the NHIDCL to justice for its incomprehension and ignorance in ensuring the safety of the travelers.

CYO has also expressed concerned with regard to the gas pipeline, which is being initiated in its area along the nation highway-29 stretch without any consultation of the stakeholders and the landowners. It claimed that a certain company under the aegis of NHIDCL is in the process of connecting the gas pipeline towards Manipur thereby jeopardising the safety of the people living along the highway stretch.

“NHIDCL, whose sole purpose is for the construction of the highway has not only failed to ensure the safety of the people in its work but is also further endangering the lives of the people by introducing the gas pipeline along the highway stretch bound for Manipur,” CYO said.

CYO stated that it would not tolerate the audacity of the corporation in compromising the safety of the people and ensured that no gas pipeline would go along the highway in Chakhroma jurisdiction. It also warned that any individual or company carrying out such work without prior consultation in Chakhroma jurisdiction would be doing so at their own loss and risk.

It questioned as to who would be held responsible or accountable in the event of any mishap in the near future as the government of the day is not well equipped to handle such catastrophe.
