Kohima, July 12 (EMN):
The signature campaign against the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and other essential commodities, which has been organised by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), is said to be spreading beyond Kohima and Dimapur.

The NPCC had joined the nationwide agitation called by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) from July 7 to the 17th to protest the hike in prices of fuel and essential commodities in the country amid Civid-19 crisis.

It was informed that the NPCC initially planned to limit the protest to Kohima and Dimapur in the form of banners, stickers and signature campaigns but has slowly spread to other districts as well.

Sources from Congress informed Eastern Mirror that party workers initiated the agitation in other districts like Tuensang and Mokokchung on Monday.

It was learnt that the party workers had initiated the agitation in Noklak district while they are said to be seeking district administration’s permission to hold a similar campaign in Wokha. More districts are expected to join the protest, it added.

It was informed that more than 500 signatures were collected in Kohima on Monday and the district administration had given permission to the Kohima District Congress Committee to conduct signature campaign in the district till July 17, provided the Covid SOPs are followed.

Party workers informed that they conducted the campaign at two-three patrol pumps on July 7 and the 8th.

Meanwhile, a cycle yatra led by the NPCC president K Therie was organised in Dimapur on Monday to protest fuel price hike.

An update from NPCC informed that 12 cyclists took part in the cycle yatra and volunteers walked on foot in a “symbolic show of protest” in Dimapur on Monday. While lauding the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation for extending their support to the agitation, the party has urged the public to join the protest.

The 11-day agitation will conclude on July 17 with submission of a memorandum to the governor of Nagaland.
