IMPHAL, January 15
The INC has won most seats in the polls held to 18 Municipal Councils and eight Nagar Panchayats in Congress-ruled Manipur with the Independents trailing behind the INC getting 61 seats in the results declared so far.
The Indian National Congress has so far got 82 seats while the opposition BJP won 37. The local body polls were held on January 11 to elect 279 Councillors and 558 Ward Development Committee members from four valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur.
In Imphal West, the BJP got seven seats, four by Independents and 2 by INC in Mayang Imphal Municipal Council. In Sekmai Nagar Panchayat, INC won seven seats and one seat each by BJP and Independent. Independents got six seats and three by INC in Wangoi Municipal Council.
In Thoubal, Independents won 15 seats while INC got only one. Two candidates had already been declared elected unopposed in the election held for 18 Municipal Councils in the district. INC got five seats while Independents won four in Lilong Nagar Panchayat which has nine seats. Independents got five seats while INC won four in Yairipok. BJP got seven seats, one each seats by INC and Independent in Kakching Khunou. The INC won seven seats, three by BJP and two by Independents in Kakching Municipal Council.
INC won five seats and four by Independents in Sugnu Municipal Council. In Bishnupur where election was held in six Municipal Councils and one Nagar Panchayat, the INC got 25 seats, 24 by BJP, 11 by Independents and two by CPI. Of the 12 seats in Moirang Municipal Council, the INC won three while the BJP got two.
In Jiribam Municipal Council under Imphal East, out of the 10 seats, the INC and Independents got five seats each. In Andro Nagar Panchayat, INC got six seats, three by BJP and two by Independents from the total of 11 seats, ensuring the INC to get majority.
