Dimapur, Sep. 20 (EMN): Accusing the Dimapur district administration of overlooking a warning issued in March, the Tenyimi Youth Organisation of Dimapur (TYOD) has demanded an inquiry into circumstances that led to the recent spate of rockslides in Chümoukedima area, and to compensate the damages caused.

In a letter to the deputy commissioner on Sunday, the TYO stated that on March 6, it had submitted a representation to the district administration warning that the use of powerful landmines to blast the sandstone along the hill section of Chümoukedima for the four-lane road construction would result in blocking the highway and further endanger the lives of commuters.

It stated that the construction company was also warned.

‘It is to state that the surface cutting for widening the road is to be done from top to bottom and not from bottom to top but just to save time and energy by the construction company/contractors have grievously put the public life at high risk and creating untold misery which the public have started to witness.

‘The unfortunate rockslides that damaged the Nagaland welcome gate, vehicles etc., are therefore the handiwork of the construction company. Therefore, TYOD condemn the company and the engineer as well as the district administration for overlooking the matter though it has been bought to their knowledge earlier,’ the letter read.

It demanded the DC to initiate an inquiry at the earliest and publicise the findings.

The organisation also urged the construction company to compensate the ‘damages caused to individual as well as public property without delay’.

It warned that the district administration and the construction company would be held responsible for “any untoward incident”, in the event of their failure to take corrective measures.
