Dimapur, March 17 (EMN): A seminar focusing on digital payments and cashless transactions, and another, cyber security was conducted by the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) in Chuchuyimlang town in Mokokchung on March 16. The seminar was conducted in collaboration with the Ao Students’ Union of Chuchu town, a press release from the organisers informed on Thursday. The program was attended by 184 students of the town, the press release said.

Temjenngangted, a member of the faculty of NIELIT spoke about the ‘needs and importance’ of using digital payment systems and the advantages of “going cashless,” according to the press release. He highlighted to the gathering the different ways by which citizens can transfer money, or check bank balance, recharge mobile phones and DTH connections, book bus, train and flight tickets anytime anywhere using our mobile phones and computers.

The resource person also pointed out the various benefits associated with such digital transactions. A hands-on practical on the ease and speedy way of using digital payments was demonstrated during the event: an ‘amount’ was transferred from one account to another and by recharging a ‘top-up’ of a mobile number of a member of the audience.

“With the advancement on technology wherein a person even in a remote area can hold of a smart phone with access to high speed Internet and be exposed to the world, it is highly appropriate that cyber security awareness be disseminated to each and every corner of Nagaland,” said Daniel Meren, joint director of NIELIT Chuchuyimlang. Speaking on the topic “social networking and mobile security”, Meren explained the various modes by which organized traffickers, fraudsters and thieves use social networking sites and mobile phones to commit crimes from the comfort of their homes.

Further, explaining the important sections of the Information Technology Act of 2000, he urged the audience to use social networking sites responsibly and sensibly and not to misuse it. He cited various police cases “where our people had been duped, cheated and blackmailed through social networking sites and mobile phones.”

Meren has urged the community to be vigilant. He encouraged them “not to shy away but report to their parents or elders or police so that such occurrences do not happen to another brother or sister.”
