[dropcap]P[/dropcap]eeved over the loopholes in the existing democratic system and growing disenchantment among the voters, the Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (CERI) has reached Manipur.
As part of intensifying its movement, a national wide campaign will be held on October 10 by holding human chain and a public meeting at Iboyaima Sumang Leela Sanglen in Imphal so that more acceptable form of picking people’s representative could be adopted, according to CERI campaigner in the North East and a seasoned campaigner for electoral reforms, Dr M Nara.
The former CPI Minister in Manipur said, “The country, though largest democracy of the world, is suffering from certain flaws in the electoral system that makes the government more available to the people, who have money and muscle power.”“In this present electoral system, a candidate who gains more vote than others is declared winner. It need not be the majority vote,” Dr Nara said while speaking media persons at the Manipur Press Club at Majorkhul in Imphal this afternoon.
“There are several models of democracy adopted in different countries and we can take certain good aspects from each of them to make our system better and acceptable to the masses, where people feel that they are being truly represented,” he said.
It may be worth mentioning here that CERI had organized its first meeting in Ranchi in November 2010 to take and spread the message of “need to change” to the grassroots level. The day’s press conference was also attended by CPM leader Ksh Shanta, JD(S) leader K Loken and playwright N Ranjit.
