Dimapur, Nov. 22 (EMN): Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), V Shashank Shekhar, encouraged the young voters to register themselves during the present ongoing e-roll summary revision and also exercise their right to vote during election.

Shekhar stated this during an interactive meeting with various student bodies and young working professionals from Nagaland based in Delhi on November 21 at Nagaland House, New Delhi. In his keynote address, he highlighted the importance of young voters’ registration and participation with special emphasis on free and fair election, C-Vigil, etc.

A press release from the Election department stated that the meeting was chaired by Sharon Longchari, joint chief electoral officer of Nagaland. It stated that the CEO also apprised that the Election Commission of India, during the recent CEO’s conference, highlighted that there are many students and young working professionals studying or working outside their respective states.

Shekhar informed that the department is putting all efforts to connect with that section of the population and to further facilitate enrolment and participation for those voters.

A short powerpoint presentation was also presented by the joint CEO on the basic information for new voters’ registration.

During the presentation, Longchari also emphasised that India has the largest youth population, which makes for around 66% of the total population.

“Not only does this show the voting power of this demography, but it also indicates the demographic which would be most impacted, and therefore the population that should care most about voting,” she said.

Over 50 participants from various student unions like Naga Students’ Union Delhi, Angami Students’ Union Delhi, Delhi Eastern Naga Students’ Union, Ao Students’ Union Delhi, Chakesang Students’ Union Delhi, Sumi Students’ Union Delhi, Lotha Students’ Union Delhi, Rengma Students’ Union Delhi and young working professionals of Nagaland in Delhi attended the meeting.

The formal session was followed with an interactive session where the attendees shared their views and suggestions. It added that doubts and questions were addressed by the officials present. The programme was organised with the assistance of the Office of the Residence Commissioner, Nagaland House, Delhi, it stated.
