[dropcap]A[/dropcap]som Gana Parishad (AGP) said on Sunday that it would put pressure on the new government at the Centre to implement the clauses of the Assam Accord.
Talking to reporters in the city, party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said, “Now the new Prime Minister Narendra Modi should start working to keep his promises. We want the new government to give importance to implementing the clauses of Assam Accord that also includes solving the illegal immigrant’s issue.” Mahanta also appealed to the Centre to strike a bilateral deal with the Bangladesh government to solve the issue.
“Without a deal with the Bangladesh government, it is not possible to send illegal Bangladeshi citizens back to their country. The Prime Minister should ensure us a Bangladeshi-free Assam,” he added. He also talked about sealing the India-Bangladesh border and updating the National Register of Citizens. Even though the regional party faced one of the toughest times since its inception during the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls in which it failed to win even a single seat, it is upbeat about the 2016 assembly election. “Assembly election is a different ball game. We are hopeful of doing well in 2016. We are trying to win back the confidence of the voters,” Mahanta added.
However, political analysts and former AGP leaders have been extremely critical of the party leadership. Several leaders, including the party’s central committee secretary, Manoj Kumar Bora, have resigned from the party.
