DIMAPUR — The Care-Centre for Environment and Rural Poor (C-CERP), a facilitating NGO partner for Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) Peren forest division, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, organised a one-day training programme on “Improved cultivation practices of vegetables and distribution of seeds” for Self-Help Groups (SHG) in Peletkie village on November 14.
The training was aimed at enhancing agricultural skills among local farmers, focusing on advanced vegetable cultivation and sustainable pest management practices, stated an update from C-CERP.
The programme began with field visit to local jhum fields, thereby allowing experts to examine diseases affecting Naga king chili and taro crops and to provide direct insights on management strategies.
It was followed by a training session at the village council hall led by distinguished KVK Peren experts namely Dr. Patu K Zeliang, ACTO (PBG), and Dr. Prashant Kalal, SMS Horti (Fruit Science).
Dr. Zeliang discussed the nutritional importance of a variety of vegetables including beans, tomatoes, amaranth, cabbages, onions and chili, emphasizing their role in maintaining a balanced diet. She also provided practical advice on pest control for those crops to promote healthy and sustainable yields.
Dr. Kalal’s session focused on managing pests and diseases affecting citrus fruit trees and vegetable crops by explaining organic pesticide applications and cultural methods to prevent leaf curl and other diseases.
KVK Peren also distributed essential farming resources including 20 packets of treated vegetable seeds (covering the crops discussed in the training), three knapsack sprayers, three watering cans, a hoe, a bottle of Neem oil anti-free ant and over 30 pieces of hermitic bags for seeds preservation.
Farmers were also taught on nursery bed preparation techniques to increase seed germination rates and enhance crop productivity.
