IMPHAL — Indian Marxist politician and former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat demanded that the central government should take steps to ensure the process of finding a solution to the Manipur crisis.

Speaking to the reporters after visiting relief camps and meeting people in the violence hit state, Brinda Karat on Friday demanded the central government to act and ensure at least the process of finding a solution.

‘We support the demands of the victims. We support the demands for justice. We are here to express our solidarity,’ said the 76-year-old CPI leader who was here for the past three days along with a team from the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) to assess the on-going situation in Manipur and visited many relief camps.

The two AIDWA team members are PK Sreemathy and Mariam Dhawale.

Claiming that even today the voices of women in the camps, the suffering of women, suffering of children has not moved this government to act, Brinda, the first woman to serve in the CPI Politburo said, ‘it is a shame on all of us and it is a shame on our country’.

After hearing the voice of women and children of Manipur, she said, the critical question arises on the role of state government though their visit was not to bridge or produce some magic solution.

Why after 100 days, women and children are still in the camps and what is the responsibility of the government, she asked.

Prior to their departure, AIDWA team also called on the state Governor Anusuiya Uikey and shared the details of relief camps which are not being run properly besides urging the Governor to ensure safety especially for the women and children during this ethnic conflict.

With the re-opening of the schools in the state, the team informed that the public at present is facing financial difficulties in paying school fees for their children especially in private schools and urged the governor to look into the matter. The team also requested the governor to ensure safety especially for the women and children during this ethnic conflict.

The team visited about 18-20 relief camps and shared the details of relief camps which are not being run properly. The team also expressed concern about disposal of dead bodies and shortage of specialised doctors in hill areas.
