KOHIMA – Sessions on “social teachings of the Catholic Church” and “parenting in the 21st century” were held at St. Francis de Sales parish in Kohima on Saturday. The first session was led by the vicar general of Kohima Diocese, Rev. Fr. Neisalhou Carlous, while the second session was led by Dr. Helena Sobounuo Belho.

Speaking on the occasion, Carlous emphasised that the social teachings of the Catholic Church are rooted in the Bible, and these teachings have been drawn from various sources, including the Good Book, the teachings of fathers and doctors of the church, and letters from popes concerning the social environment.

He shared how the first social teachings emerged in 1981 from a pope, highlighting that humans, unlike other animals, possess a soul, consciousness, and the ability to discern between good and evil, along with their freedom, and added that just like other species of animals, human beings are inherently social creatures.

Delving into the core of the social teachings, the priest underscored the foundation in the Words of God and revealed how humans were created in the likeness of God. According to him, love, truth, justice, and freedom serve as the four pillars that define the divine image within human beings.

Carlous said these profound qualities shape the essence of human existence, reflecting the divine nature imbued in humans.

Speaking during the second session, Belho stressed the significance of understanding individual differences and noted that each person is a unique creation of God with distinct potentials and abilities.

Belho emphasised the importance of fulfilling expectations in marital relationships, with husbands and wives needing love, respect, protection, and support. She also highlighted the challenges brought on by rapid changes in science and technology and the impact of Western culture.

Further, she said that there is a pressing need for reform in the education system, recognising the necessity for positive changes to better cater to the evolving needs of students. She mentioned that parents’ approach to handling their children must be nurturing and effective, ensuring that it fosters a supportive and loving environment for their growth and development.

Striving for improved parenting practises is crucial for shaping a brighter future for the younger generation, Belho said, and encouraged the adoption of positive values. She reminded the audience of the importance of knowing God’s love and emulating the Holy Family.

The event featured songs by ACYA (SFS) and it was chaired by Menguzelie Adrian. Keneilhounyü Daniel delivered the welcome note, and catechist Petekhriezo Francis led the invocation prayer, with Bible readings from Mezhüvinuo Natalia and Medozeü Myrln. The vote of thanks was proposed by Vikuo Joseph, and the benediction was given by Rev. Fr. Varghese.
