DIMAPUR — A three-day Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) zonal convention from October 17 to 19 was held at St. John the Evangelist Parish, Khonoma.
According to an update, participants from Kohima, Diphu, and Imphal, numbering several hundred, gathered to share the word of God and the Eucharist and to plan ways to involve everyone “in witnessing the love of Jesus”.
It stated that BECs are an attempt to make the Church more relevant in today’s context, adding that Pope St. John Paul II referred to BECs as a concrete expression of the Church and a home and family for everyone.
The special invitees for the convention were Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, bishop of Kohima, Rev. Paul Mattekatt, bishop of Diphu, and Rev. Dominic Lumon, archbishop emeritus of Imphal.
The Eucharistic procession took place on October 18 with a large number of people. The resource persons were Rev. Benny Varghese, bishop of Itanagar; Rev. Jose Mukala, bishop emeritus of Kohima; Fr. Dr. Hippolytus, coordinator; and John Gurung, BEC, DRT Sikkim.
The convention, themed “BEC is the heartbeat of the church and the family,” concluded with a closing ceremony on October 19.
