DIMAPUR — Kohima District Administration, in collaboration with the District Hub for Women’s Empowerment (DHEW), held a Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) sensitisation programme on September 15 at Jakhama town.
The programme was held on the Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act, customary laws, social audits, and creating women- and child-friendly proposals under the village development boards (VDBs).
While delivering the keynote address, Nockpai Konyak, SDO (Civil), Jakhama, gave a brief introduction to the BBBP scheme and activities initiated in the district. He also called for the inclusion of women in decision-making and policy-making at the village level.
Speaking on social audits and creating women and child-friendly budgets, BDO Jakhama, Vilophi stated that social audit is a powerful tool for social transformation, community participation, and government accountability, and elaborated on its benefits, key features, and emphasised the responsibilities of key officials and stakeholders in ushering change through social audit.
On women-centric programmes and schemes, Vikeduozo Sorhie, gender specialist, DHEW, Kohima, provided a detailed account of Mission Shakti and its sub-schemes, Sambal (Safety and Security for Women) and Samarthya (Empowerment of Women). He also explained the requirements and eligibility for receiving benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) scheme.
While speaking about women’s safety, he emphasised Sakhi-OSC and women helpline 181 and how they address various issues that women face.
Village councils, VDBs, SHGs, women organisations, and youth organisations from various villages under the Jakhama and Kezocha circles participated in the programme.
