Kohima, Oct. 29 (EMN): In a bid to raise funds for underprivileged children with their education, the Beauty and Aesthetics Society of Nagaland (BASN) and the 15 contestants for the upcoming Miss North East 2022, organised a ‘charity sale’ in Kohima on Saturday.
The 15 contestants from eight north-eastern states arrived in Nagaland on Oct. 26 to vie for the Miss North East 2022 title, the grand finale of which has been scheduled in Kohima on Nov. 3.
Deputy Commissioner of Kohima Shanavas C addressing the inaugural charity sale said that Northeast is a ‘neglected area’ in the country and therefore needs special attention.
He called upon the people of Northeast to spread the message that lack of development is not an excuse for corruption. He said that people in Northeast are so accustomed to it that they are okay with what they have and the corruption just goes up. But as citizens, one needs to be aware and have the vision to grow along with the rest of the country.
He said that children in the region do not know how to dream because they were trained in such a way that they are okay with what they have. They don’t have exposure and do not go out of the state or out of the region. As a result, when they grow up they become mediocre citizens. In this regard, he said that beauty pageants or be it any other field, have a major role to play in society.
Convener of Miss North NE 2022, Sarah Naam, informed the charity sale has been organised as part of the Miss North East 2022 activities undertaken to help the underprivileged children of Nagaland. All the proceeds of the event will be donated to Medemers fund, a crowd-funded profit project dedicated to empowering children from less privileged backgrounds with skills and knowledge by financially helping them with their education.
‘Beauty pageants held are not simply to seek physical qualities but believe that the most important quality is compassion and empathy for fellow citizens. It is our duty to help those who cannot help themselves’, she said.
Miss North East was held in Nagaland twice in the past, in 1996 and 2004. However, this is the first edition initiated under NEBPO, a conglomeration of all the eight NE states’ official beauty pageant organisers.
Representative of Medemer Fund, Sentinaro said the project was initiated to aid underprivileged students to receive an education. Since its inception in 2019, it has helped 20 students with their education.
