Awareness session on sexual, reproductive health held in Kohima
Health officials and students during the awareness session on sexual and reproductive health held at Modern School, Kohima, on Tuesday.

DIMAPUR — As part of the 100 days campaign under SANKALP, the Kohima district administration, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, held an awareness session on sexual and reproductive health at Modern School, Kohima, on Tuesday.

During the awareness session, Dr. Khriesituonuo Liezietsu, medical officer, Tuophema, said that sexual and reproductive talks are considered as taboo in the Naga society, an update stated.

She however maintained that when it comes to sexual and reproductive health of women and girls, society needs to be more open about. She also urged girls to go to health clinics instead of self diagnosis through the internet.

Speaking on sexual and reproductive health, Dr. Liezietsu highlighted how puberty brings in emotional and physical changes and how it affects the adolescents, especially girls during menstruation.

Stating that every girl or woman has the right over her own body, she also gave a brief explanation of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ touch.  The medical officer also informed on the different contraceptives available and the dangers of STDs and how it affects girls and women.

Dr. Liezietsu further explained at length the importance of pre and post natal care. On the dangers of unsafe abortions, she said that more than half of abortions are carried out without proper protocol and that about seven million women and girls who underwent abortions have health issues.

The programme was chaired by Kesoneinuo, gender specialist, DHEW, Kohima.
