Assam University Diphu Campus celebrates 16th foundation day

Diphu, July 18 (EMN): The Assam University Diphu Campus (AUDC) on Monday celebrated its 16th foundation day at Open Air Auditorium, AUDC campus, 8 km Lumding Road on Monday.

Participating in the celebration, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang announced to allot another 3000 bighas for expansion of the campus.

CEM said, “Before the AUDC was set-up several unfortunate students due to financial burden in the family could not continue their higher studies. But 15 years back when the AUDC was set-up many students got the opportunity to complete their masters degrees and research.”

“The KAAC is continuously working hard to convert the AUDC into a full-fledged University. As informed by the AUDC authority that another five new academic departments will be introduced. The KAAC has earlier allotted 450 bighas to the AUDC. The KAAC has taken an Executive Committee resolution to allot another 3000 bighas to the institution.

“The KAAC is committed to the development of both technical and non-technical education,” he said.  The CEM urged the students to aim high in life so that every individual can think to contribute to nation-building.

The AUDC of Assam University (AU), Silchar was set up in 2007. Initially, the AUDC was functioning at the Hindi Training Centre with five departments. The AUDC was then shifted to the present place at 8 Mile, Lumding Road. It now has 10 departments viz. History, Political Science, Assamese, Anthropology, Life Science, Commerce, Geography, Physics, English and Hindi with one Centre i.e. Centre for Tribal Studies.

The AUDC is insisting on the Assam University, Silchar to introduce another five more departments –Education, Mass Communication, Ecology and Environmental Studies, Tourism & Hospitality Management and Centre for Northeast studies. 

Presently the AUDC has 1200 students with 43 teaching staff, 22 non-teaching staff and 22 casual and data entry operators.

Prof. Sivasish Biswas is the Pro Vice Chancellor of AUDC. The Campus authority has also stated that from 2010 to date, it has awarded 140 research scholars with PhD degrees.

Vice Chancellor (VC) of Assam University, Silchar, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant participated in the celebration as the chief guest said, “We are at 16. The AUDC has a nice campus full of dreams. The AUDC has taken a good journey in the last 15 years and needs to move forward with full enthusiasm.”

“To benefit the students of this region the AUDC needs more departments and the AU has agreed to introduce 5 more departments to this campus. The AUDC should be a role model to aspire for learning among the students. It should strengthen the institution and develop skill and holistic learning within the campus,” the VC said.  

“It is a great moment that CEM could inaugurate one boy’s hostel with a 100-bed capacity named Kharsing Terang Boys Hostel,” he added. 

The Committee also submitted a memorandum to VC, Assam University, Prof. Pant for the introduction of Education and Economics departments, construction of boundary walls to protect from encroachers, up-gradation of the Centre for Learning in Tribal Studies as an independent and fully functional department, introduction of Anthropology department in other colleges in Karbi Anglong, to allocate special reservation of jobs (3rd and 4th grade) in AUDC to local ST (H) community and regularisation of Pro Vice Chancellor.
