DIPHU — The body of 28-year-old man, who was washed away by a flash flood on Thursday might, was recovered on Friday around 2 pm, after 13 hours of search by the joint team of State Disaster Rescue Team (SDRT), Dongkamukam police, and local youths.

The victim, identified as Robin Terang from Nutun Ghilani under Dongkamukam police outpost in West Karbi Anglong, was said to be shifting the belongings to a safer place along with his friends when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Meanwhile, it was informed that the flood is still posing threat to the people, especially those living near the embankment of Kopili River in West Karbi Anglong district, as the water level hasn’t receded.

The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, told reporters on Friday that he had directed the Land & Revenue and Administrative officials of KAAC to conduct a joint survey of families affected by the flood.

“The worst affected is my constituency Bithung Rengma, including Kopili. So far, 351 families in my constituency and 61 families from Kopili have been affected by the flood. We are providing immediate relief to the affected families. Each family is provided with 10 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1 litre edible oil and 1 kg salt,” he said.

To protect the embankment of Kopili river in Bithung and Kopili MAC constituency, the CEM said that the government of Assam has sanctioned more than INR 100 crore through a special package from the Water Resources department. He added that the work for the project would resume after the election.

The CEM also said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) would take up road construction from Nillie to Silchar via Baithalangso, Dongkamukam, Kheroni and Halflong. The RCC bridge over the Kopili river at Kheroni has lost its durability. A new bridge will be constructed under this package, the CEM added.
