Asheer Akhtar signs extension contract with NEUFC till 2026
KOHIMA — The NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) and Asheer Akhtar have signed a contract extension till 2026, the club announced on Thursday.
“Asheer has been one of the standout performers last season, demonstrating remarkable consistency and strength in defense,” the club stated.
The 29-year-old defender featured in 19 league games last season. In his first Indian Super League (ISL) season, he gained invaluable experience and proved his mettle by clocking over 1600 minutes of playtime. His contributions were not just limited to defense, as he also scored a goal and provided an assist.

Hailing from Kamptee, Maharashtra, Akhtar spent the majority of his career in the I-League, playing for some of the top teams and honing his defensive capabilities.
“I am thrilled to extend my contract with NorthEast United FC. This club has become my home, and I am excited about the direction we are heading. The upcoming season is going to be exciting, and I can’t wait to give my best for our fans and the team”, Akhtar said on his contract extension.
Juan Pedro Benali, head coach of NorthEast United FC, said that Akhtar is a “top professional” and expressed happiness to have him for another year. “His presence provides us with much-needed stability in defense. Having a good Indian centre back is crucial, and we feel we have one of the best in the country with us,” Benali added.
Mandar Tamhane, CEO of NorthEast United FC, believes that Akhtar has proved why he is one of the best in the league and added his presence in the backline is vital for the team. “We trust him because he has shown us that he can become one of the best and be in contention for a spot in the national team,” he said.
