The 54th Teacher’s Day celebration programme was organized by the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) at Town Hall which was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, C Apok Jamir as the chief guest, and the ADS of Food & Civil Supplies, Dimapur, I Anungba Sanglir, as the guest of honor on September 5.
The day was marked with presentations of songs and inspiring tributes by the students to their teachers, presentation of awards to teachers and achievers and felicitation to the teachers.Chief guest and Parliamentary Secretary, C Apok Jamir, while paying rich tributes to the teachers, regarded teachers as national builders. However, he asserted that Teacher’s Day was not just a day for celebration but also a time for introspection as to whether ‘We, as a teacher, have performed or not.’ He also said it was a time to study whether ‘We (teachers) have really contributed or whether we have really sacrificed to the expectations of the society.’
While maintaining that there have been tremendous changes in the system and techniques of imparting educating with the use of modern technology in the present day, he however said the ‘value system’ has never changed on which the society depended. He asserted that virtues such as ‘honesty, integrity, hardworking etc’ have never been compromised. He, therefore, said the great responsibility to carry on the values lies with the teachers and the students.
The chief guest also said September 5 is not only a day to celebrate Teacher’s Day, but a day for the teachers, students and the politicians alike to do reality check on the present scenario of the society especially since Mokokchung town is celebrating 125th anniversary this year. He said that it is an appropriate time to introspect on the achievements and also on areas where the society still lack. He asked the audience to introspect on the condition of the road, the electricity problem, and the value system.
“To tell you the truth, I am not satisfied. I am not satisfied at all. I think no one is satisfied at all,” said the Parliamentary Secretary who is the representative from the Mokokchung town constituency.
In this connection, he challenged the students to think of 25 years ahead on how they want to see Mokokchung when it celebrates 150th anniversary. He said it is a big challenge for the youth.
While agreeing that technology could enhance the pace of development, he however said without values, ‘You are zero.’ He said only if one could have the value system, pinpoint the lacking in the society, then the society would surely progress. Saying that students would be the main stakeholders 25 years on, he said there is much to do which requires a proactive role from every member of the society.
Furthering quoting line from a song ‘Hero’ which said that there is a hero in each one of us, he urged the power and hero in each individual to come out and deliver in the interest of the public.
AKM president, L Jemti Longchar, delivered the welcome address, while the guest of honor I Anungba Sanglir and the Principal of the Model Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung, Yutsung, also spoke on the occasion.
