Manipur today observed the Ant-Terrorism Day (day against terrorism) in commemoration of the bomb blast attack of May 21, 1991 at Tamil Nadu at which the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi was killed. In the state-level bservation that was held at the Banquet Hall of 1st Manipur Rifles today, chief guest CM O Ibobi said that observing such a day that upholds the idea of standing against terrorism is very appropriate in the present context of Manipur. He urged every person of the society to fight against terrorism at their individual levels also, and not to handover the task to government alone.
CM Ibobi also opined that organisations currently operating in the state should work knowing the impulse of the people, and should back out when they no longer get the support of the public. He appealed them to instead work for the collective welfare and peace of the society. Attending the observation as the president, Deputy CM Gaikhangam recounted various achievements of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, by mentioning the signing of historic Punjab Accord in 1985 and Mizoram Accord of 1986, which were milestone events in bringing internal peace to the country. Gaikhangam also added that it was during Rajiv’s time that the voting age of citizens were brought down from 21 to 18. He appealed all to follow the footsteps of peace initiative taken up by Rajiv Gandhi by holding peace dialogues.
Cabinet ministers, MLAs, top civil and police officials also attended the function. All those present at the function took a pledge to stand against terrorism.
