Dimapur, Aug. 27 (EMN): All Blacks defeated Merhulietsa FC in a thrilling final to clinch the Morning Premier League title at D Khel Ground, Kohima on Aug 26.
The five-month long season began in April and concluded on Friday, an update stated.
All Blacks started the game as favourites and took the lead early in the 13th minute courtesy of Salie. But despite enjoying most of the possession and chances created, All Blacks could not extend the lead making the second half a nervy affair. Merhulietsa FC fought hard and looked to cut the deficit on certain occasion until Azo added the second for All Blacks in the 78th minute to secure all three points and their 2nd MPL title.
Unity FC finished second in the table with 40 points, just two points behind the champions. Having been sitting at the top for a brief period after their 5-2 win against Gazelle FC earlier in the week, Unity FC was hoping for an upset win for Merhulietsa FC but the result didn’t go in their favour.
Vanguard Old Boys pounded an already-relegated Kohima Raiders to finish in third. It was a 7-0 win for the Vanguard OB, with goals coming from Anguzo (2, 10 and 25), Hethanglo (22 and 42) and Thanpenlo (29 and 40).
Mustang FC finished in fourth place despite losing their final game 0-2 against Gethemgo who finished behind them in the table.
Zhapu of Kohima Raiders won the Golden Boot with 21 goals while Pele of All Blacks won the Golden Glove with seven clean sheets.
Morning FC and Kohima Raiders were the two teams that were relegated this season.
