Alan Rickman, known for ‘Harry Potter’ role dies aged 69

British actor Alan Rickman has died, his agent confirmed to NBC News. He was 69.
Rickman — a veteran of both screen and stage — was known for his roles in “Die Hard,” “Love Actually” and the “Harry Potter” films.
He got his start in theater, earning a Tony nomination for 1988’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”
Rickman’s Hollywood star turn came after he played the villain in “Die Hard,” and the actor went on to win an Emmy award and Golden Globe in 1996 for his portrayal of Rasputin.He also was nominated for an outstanding lead actor Emmy in 2004 for his role in “Something the Lord Made.”
The Guardian newspaper was first to report news of Rickman’s death. It said the star had been suffering from cancer.
British actor and writer Stephen Fry called Rickman’s death “desperately sad news.”
“A man of such talent, wicked charm and stunning screen and stage presence. He’ll be sorely missed,” he wrote in a Tweet.
Actor David Morrissey also expressed his shock, calling Rickman a “a wonderful actor and lovely man.”
