Advisor Tongpang Ozukum launches spring shed management at Longkotsung

MOKOKCHUNG — Coinciding with the World Environment Day 2023, Advisor, Water Resources, Tongpang Ozukum, launched the spring shed management for rejuvenation of spring at Longkotsung, Mokokchung.

Spring shed management for rejuvenation is implemented with a vision to sensitise people on spring water conservation, on the theme ‘Rejuvenation of springs and water bodies.’

The advisor said that the need was felt to spread the awareness to the people of Mokokchung on water conservation and hence the theme, “Rejuvenation of springs and water bodies” was chosen.

He mentioned about 200 million of India’s population depends on spring water, which includes Nagaland and Mokokchung too.

He informed that the Ministry of Jaal Shakti has come up with the framework document to revive the springs and focus on spring rejuvenation programmes.

In this regard, he encouraged the people to take Longtsungkong as the model of spring shed management for rejuvenation of spring and suggested coming up with inventory on springs in Mokokchung, for which, he assured help and assistance from District Planning and Development Board (DPDB).

Ozukum also said that instead of organising usual programmes inside the four corners of a building, people should be practically demonstrated on how technical inputs are being put to conserve spring.

The programme is a call of the Ministry of Jaal Shakti Mission and six departments converged in terms of technical inputs, resources and physical support.

The departments are District Forest office, Land Resource, Water Resource, PHED, Soil and Water Conservation and Rural Development (RD).

Earlier, the keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sashiyangba, District Project office, Land Resources, Mokokchung. He said the programme is more like a reminder on the idea of water conservation and that the attendees of the programme should propagate it in their respective places and districts.

The programme was followed by a signature campaign on spring water conservation, one-use of plastic and conservation of forest.
