Advisor Moatoshi Longkumer calls for sustainable agriculture

DIMAPUR — The School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, celebrated its 47th Foundation Day on Saturday at the multipurpose hall, SAS: NU, with Moatoshi Longkumer, Advisor for Labour, Employment and Skill Development, and Excise, as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Longkumer lauded the progress of the institution over the years and acknowledged its transformation into a highly respected establishment, producing successful entrepreneurs, scientists, politicians, bureaucrats, and agricultural professionals, according to a press release.

He emphasised the need for agriculture to focus not only on cultivation but also on sustainability for future generations. He praised the leadership at SAS: NU and encouraged alumni to continue supporting the institution’s growth.

Addressing the students, he remarked that they are the torchbearers of the institution and the future of agriculture in both the state and the country. Longkumer also addressed the scientists and faculty of the institution, urging them to focus on research in sustainable agriculture, modern farming, and climate resilience to elevate the institution to new heights.

The special guest, Dr. John Murry, advisor of JK Farms, Dimapur, shared insights from his experience in hi-tech horticulture.

Dr. Murry, from the medical fraternity, who is involved in advanced farming, stressed the importance of skilling in agriculture. He encouraged undergraduate students to combine their academic knowledge with practical skills, emphasising that there is no shortcut to success except through skill development.

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Prof. Akali Sema, Pro Vice-Chancellor of SAS: NU.

Also, during the event, Prof. L Tongpang Longkumer, president of the alumni association, announced the recipients of the Alumni Awards for 2024.

The Alumni Award for Academic Excellence was awarded to Keerthana R, a student from the 2020-2024 batch of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, for her outstanding performance, securing an OGPA of 8.95. She received a cash prize of INR 20,000 along with a certificate.

The Peri Om Pun Excellence Award for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture first-year students (2023-24) was conferred on Wapangnaro S Imsong, who secured an OGPA of 8.56. She received INR 10,000 and a certificate.

The R2 Seeds Excellence Award, given to second-year students (2023-24), was presented to Aysha Parween, who secured an OGPA of 8.41. She was awarded a cash prize of INR 10,000 and a certificate.

The Lt. Cherish Ch. Marak Excellence Award for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture third-year students (2023-24) was awarded to Nivedita Kumari, who achieved an OGPA of 9.08. She received a cash prize of INR 10,000 and a certificate for her exceptional academic performance.
