Abau Virie emerges champion of 51st Chakhroma Wrestling Meet

Dimapur, Feb. 10 (EMN): Abau Virie emerged as the champion of the 51st Chakhroma Wrestling Meet and walked home with a cash prize of INR 80,000.

The meet was organised by Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) at DDSC Stadium, Dimapur on Thursday.

Seyiesalie Nakhro, Neikotsilie Krose and Vizokhoto Nguzhü won the second, third and fourth positions and received INR 50,000, INR 40,000 and INR 30,000 respectively.

In the junior category, Terhujavi Terhüja won the first place and received INR 20,000, while Rokokhoto Kemie secured second and received INR 15,000.

Thepfukedo secured third, while Neiketuzo Kehie won fourth place and received INR 10,000 and INR 7,000 respectively. The quarter finalists in the senior and junior categories received INR 5000 and INR 2000 respectively.

Zhaleo Rio, advisor of Sericulture, Excise and Minority Affairs,who was the chief guest, said that in Naga wrestling, the Chakhesang, Angami and Zeliang mostly  participated but now, other tribes were also starting to take part.

He stated that Naga wrestling is now a popular and refined indigenous sport among Nagas and urged participants to come forward to take part in the indigenous sport.

Maintaining that the state government is ready to give support to every sports activity, he asserted that one must have discipline, both outside as well as inside the field, in order to become a sportsperson.

Talking about the relations between the three brothers — Sumi, Chakhesang and Angami– he shared that there is unity among the brothers and encouraged them to continue with the same spirit of co-operation in every activity. Further, in relation to the controversies due to the recent declaration of new districts, he appealed to the people not to complain or distort histories and share in social media, but to have the spirit of accommodation, change the mindset and learn together.
