The copy reportedly had a prior offer of $300,000 rejected by investors before being bought by an anonymous buyer for $2 million.
The sale broke the previous record set by another game from the Mario franchise just a month ago when a copy of Super Mario 64 was auctioned for $1.56 million.
The 1985 ‘Super Mario Bros.‘ NES game copy reportedly had a 9.8 A+ rating on the Wata Scale. The Wata Scale is a grading and certification system for the video game collectible market. This means that the copy was in an “exceptional” condition.
Mint copies of classic games are selling like hotcakes right now. Last July, a copy of Super Mario Bros. was sold for $114,000 at an auction. In November, a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 broke the record when it was auctioned for $156,000. The record didn’t stand long as in April, another copy of Super Mario Bros. was sold for $660,000. The record was broken again in July after a copy of The Legend of Zelda was auctioned for $870,000.
