Guwahati, June 4: As promised in his election campaign, new Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to undertake sealing of the India-Bangladesh border on a war footing.
The Chief Minister said this while chairing a meeting with the top brass of the BSF led by its Director General KK Sharma.

Sonowal asked the BSF to ensure erection of fencing expeditiously for a safe border with the neighbouring country.

The chief minister asked the BSF to make use of ‘smart technological solutions’ like laser walls and surveillance gadgets to maintain security at the frontiers.

“Erection of fencing along the border including riverine areas has to be dealt with resolutely if we want to make our borders safe. It is a part of our pledge that we will completely seal international border with Bangladesh in order to keep infiltration and smuggling from across the border at bay,” he said.

Sonowal said the government would give all help to the BSF in carrying out the job, particularly along the 42 km stretch in Dhubri sector which the BSF described as challenging.

General Officer Commanding 4 Corps Lieutenant General Debraj Anbu today called on Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal here and apprised him of the prevailing security scenario in the state.

The meeting with the GOC 4 Corps was the first since Sonowal took up office and the two held discussions on several dimensions of Assam’s security.

Anbu told Sonowal that the security scenario in Assam has improved remarkably and the situation “is well under control”, said a CMO release.

Sonowal sought GOC 4 Corps’ cooperation and also assured to extend his government’s help on all fronts for the progress and prosperity of Assam.

He also asked Anbu to extend the Army’s outreach programme ‘Sadbhavana’ to establish its connection with the people of far-flung areas and ensure the state’s security in all spheres.

Chief Secretary V K Pipersenia, Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay, Commissioner and Secretary, Home L S Changsan were also present at the meeting, the release said.
