In fight against plastic, new campaign promotes reusable tumblers
DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), in collaboration with Nagaland Coffee, launched the “Tumbler Takeover” awareness campaign on Thursday at Nagaland Coffee in Dimapur.
The initiative aims to promote the use of reusable tumblers instead of disposable takeaway cups to tackle environmental issues caused by single-use waste, stated a press release. The event was organised under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) as part of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
Rongsenben Longkumer, junior scientific assistant at NPCB, highlighted the significance of the campaign in fostering a culture of sustainability, particularly in reducing the environmental footprint of the food and beverage industry.
She further noted that such initiatives align with global objectives, including United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
Yanathung Kithan, scientist ‘B’ at NPCB, emphasised the pressing need to adopt eco-friendly habits at both individual and collective levels. He commended the campaign for aligning with the principles of Mission LiFE and for encouraging responsible consumption practices among the public.
He also expressed hope that other cafes in the state would adopt similar initiatives to contribute to promoting sustainable businesses and working towards a healthier environment.
Vivito Yeptho, proprietor of Nagaland Coffee, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with NPCB for this meaningful initiative. He noted that this is the first initiative of its kind in Nagaland and hoped it would inspire cafes across the state and other Northeastern states to adopt similar models.
As part of the campaign, the NPCB provided reusable tumblers to Nagaland Coffee. The café will offer these tumblers to regular customers who pledge to reuse them for takeaway orders on future visits.
Furthermore, as part of the media awareness campaign, participants are encouraged to post on their social media accounts, tagging the Nagaland Pollution Control Board and Nagaland Coffee, and using the hashtag #TumblerTakeoverNagaland.
