MOKOKCHUNG — The indefinite shutdown of the District Youth Resources & Sports Office (DYRSO) in Mokokchung has been lifted following a resolution between the landowners and government to address grievances over appointment of a non-landowner as a multi-task staff (MTS) on Thursday.

The shutdown, which began on November 5, was initiated after a non-landowner was appointed despite an ultimatum from the landowners to revoke the appointment. The situation escalated with landowners threatening to shut down the entire Imkongmeren Sports Complex including its surrounding facilities.

The lift on shutdown restored normalcy to the operations of the DYRSO and the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, averting disruptions to sports and youth-related activities in the area.

An amicable resolution was reached after the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung convened a meeting on November 21. The DC of Mokokchung conveyed a written assurance from the department to revoke the contentious appointment and replace it with a rightful landowner as per an agreement dating back to 1993.

The resolution was formalised in a meeting attended by representatives of the Landowners Board Mokokchung, Ungma Village Council Chairman, landowners and district administration officials.

The landowners have expressed their satisfaction with the outcome, emphasising the significance of honouring the 1993 agreement.

Representatives from the Pongen, Longkumer and Jamir clans of Ungma also attended the summing up event, wherein they have expressed solidarity with the landowners and urged the government to expedite the corrective appointment process.

Meanwhile, the landowners have warned of potential future action if the government procrastinated in implementing the new appointment order. The three clans of Ungma have resolved to take their own measures should the assurance not be honoured promptly.
