IMPHAL — In a major political development, the National People’s Party (NPP), a coalition partner in Manipur’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, on Sunday withdrew its support expressing deep concern over the prevailing law and order situation in the state.

In an official letter addressed to the BJP national president, JP Nadda, which was made available to media on Sunday evening, the NPP national president, Conrad K Sangma, has expressed concern over the prevailing law and order situation in the state of Manipur.

Stating that the situation had further deteriorated in the last few days in Manipur where many more innocent lives have been lost and are going through immense suffering, the NPP chief’s letter said, “We strongly feel that the Manipur state government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy.”

“Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led Government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect,” it added.

In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP won with absolute majority with 32 seats of the 60-member assembly, while the NPP came second with seven seats. The opposition Congress and Naga People’s Front (NPF) secured five seats each.

It may be noted that NPP, which has seven legislators, had extended support to the BJP led government two days after N Biren Singh was sworn in as the chief minister on March 23, 2022.

The seven NPP MLAs are N Kayisii from Tadubi, Mayanglam Rameshwar Singh from Kakching, Thongam Shanti Singh from Moirang, Irengbam Nalini from Oinam, Khuraijam Loken Singh from Wangoi, Janghemlung Panmei from Tamenglong and Sheikh Noorul Hassan from Kshetrigao.
