Capt. Kenguruse tournament: Halcyon United book semifinal berth
KOHIMA — Halcyon United on Saturday claimed a spot in the semifinals after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Mavericks FC at the ongoing Captain N Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament played at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima
Mavericks FC, who made headlines earlier in the tournament with an emphatic 12-0 victory against St. Xavier College, came into the match as strong contenders.
However, Halcyon United stood their ground and fired all cylinders to upset their rivals.
The opening goal of the match was scored by Ngamminlun of Halcyon United in the first minute of play, catching the Mavericks FC players off-guard.
The first half remained intense, with Halcyon’s defense effectively blocking Mavericks’ attempts to equalise. In the 40th minute, Vebizo doubled Halcyon’s lead, and Shurhosul added a third just four minutes later, establishing a dominant 3-0 scoreline.
Mavericks rallied when Bumang scored in the 43rd minute, injecting energy back into their game. Their efforts paid off again in the 46th minute when Kevisanyu successfully converted a penalty, reducing the deficit to 3-2.
Despite a strong push from the Mavericks, Halcyon United held their ground, skillfully managing the closing minutes to secure their much-needed win.
Currently, Kevisanyu of Mavericks FC leads as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals in two games.
With Saturday’s win, Halcyon United will now against the Head Hunters FC in the semi finals.
