DIMAPUR — With an objective to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has conducted state talent search examination (STSE).
NBSE conducted the state talent search examination as part of its golden jubilee, in collaboration with Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), National Council of Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi.
An update from NBSE stated that the first stage, a written examination of 2 hour of 100 multiple choice questions was held in all the 16 districts at 22 centres on September 10. It stated that a total of 5265 students of Class 9 from all registered institutions under NBSE sat for the examination out of which 66 students were selected for stage 2.
For the stage 2 competition, PARAKH, NCERT has mentored the students online through four panel of mentors namely Prof. Jasim Ahmed, professor at IASE, JMI; Prof. Charu Monga, professor at IIT Delhi; Prof. Jay Dhariwal, professor at IIT Delhi; and Prof. Sumer Singh, professor at IIT Delhi.
It stated that the online mentoring was held from October 16 to November 1 focusing on project identification and developing projects which is relevant to the community. It added that the selected 66 students from all 16 districts were divided into 21 groups along with 1 teacher in-charge from each school. The groups presented the projects on November 6 at Mount Tabor in Kohima.
NBSE expressed hope that the commemoration of its golden jubilee would be a platform to ignite interest in STEM fields and enable schools to march toward innovative STEM teaching methods, encouraging a shift towards inquiry-based and experiential learning.
The projects were adjudged by a panel of 5 judges including two from Science and Technology department and one each from Power department, Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, and Public Health Engineering department.
The report stated that projects were evaluated and adjudged based on different criteria given by PARAKH, New Delhi. The 18 groups from all the 16 districts of the state except Peren and Chümoukedima participated at the programme.
The result declaration programme was attended by Prof. GT Thong, pro-vice chancellor of Nagaland University, Kohima campus, as the special guest, while Asano Sekhose, chairperson of NBSE, delivered the welcome address and Prof. Indrani Bhaduri, CEO and head of PARAKH and ESD, NCERT, addressed the audience through a virtual connection.
It stated that first position was won by two schools namely Mezhür Higher Secondary School and Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School from Kohima district for the project on ‘Biogas through anaerobic digestion process.’
The second position was won by four schools namely St. Mary’s High School, Christ King High School, St. John’s Higher Secondary School and Eklavya Model Residential School, Tizit, from Mon district for the project on ‘Integration of waste management and sustainable agriculture.’
The third position was won by three schools namely Eden Academy, Town Higher Secondary School and Queen Mary Higher Secondary School from Mokokchung district for the project on ‘Sustainable waste management.’
A workshop on ‘World of work’ was simultaneously held during the programme.
