Nagaland University organises youth parliament in Lumami
DIMAPUR — Nagaland University’s department of Political Science organised the Yuvamanthan Youth Parliament under the aegis of Viksit Bharat@2047 on the theme “Bridging theory to practice, empowering youth with skills” at I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall in Lumami on Monday.
The chief guest for the inaugural session was Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik, vice chancellor of Nagaland University, stated a press release.
In his speech, Prof. Patnaik dwelt on the Indian parliamentary system and its pivotal role in empowering the youth. He asserted that, in being swayed by the Western interpretation of democracy, the essence of India’s socio-political dimension and historical moorings had long been ignored.
However, he stated that the system of Panchayat, which is still cherished today, views interrogation and discourse as essential ingredients of social life and is deeply entrenched in the social moorings. He noted that democracy left to itself may devolve into mobocracy, but when meritocracy exercises reason and logic for the betterment of society, democracy thrives.
Prof. Patnaik emphasised the slogan “think global, act local,” stating that the institution can be strengthened by adhering to the essence of Indian civilisational discourse—whether socio-economic or political—by reiterating the indigenous element.
Furthermore, he urged everyone to assert their rights and uphold the essence of institutions that ensure their freedom, dignity, integrity, honesty, and empowerment.
Earlier, the welcome and opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Moamenla Amer, head of the department of Political Science, who stressed the concern that universities in India produce lakhs of graduates, but most of them are unemployed due to a lack of required skills. She highlighted the need to focus on how young people can participate in democracy.
She also stated that the youth of today will shape future generations. In response to this, the parliament was organised by Nagaland University to enhance the skills of students and provide real-life exposure in discussion, debating, and policy-making.
