MOKOKCHUNG — At the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2024, Super Senior FC secured victory over Moanungsang Memorial Sporting Club (MMSC) in a tie-breaker, winning 4-2 after both teams failed to score during regular and extra time in their quarterfinal match at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on Thursday.

The first half saw MMSC consistently pushing forward and pressing high up the field. They strung together multiple passes in an attempt to break down Super Senior FC’s well-organised defence.

However, despite their efforts, MMSC could not carve out any clear-cut chances. Super Senior’s defence, led by a calm and composed backline, remained resolute.

Super Senior FC had fewer opportunities going forward, primarily focusing on counterattacks. However, they also found it difficult to create goal-scoring chances, as the rain-drenched pitch caused the ball to get stuck in the mud, slowing down the game and disrupting fluid play.

Both sides went into halftime with the score still locked at 0-0.

The second half followed a similar script, with MMSC continuing to enjoy the lion’s share of possession. MMSC forwards frequently found promising positions but were unable to convert their chances.

With the score still goalless at the end of 90 minutes, the match entered extra time. Both teams showed signs of fatigue, with the heavy downpour adding to the physical toll. Extra time ended without a breakthrough, sending the match to a tie-breaker.

Super Senior FC’s goalkeeper, Nungsangyanger, made two crucial saves during the penalty shootout, denying MMSC’s first and last shooters, Tinurepba and Ayimnekshi. All four of Super Senior’s penalty takers converted their shots successfully.
